Le rovine della città di Gede si trovano a 7 km dalla città di Watamu ed è il sito archeologico più importante della costa. La parola "Gede" deriva dal dialetto Oromo e significa "prezioso". Dichiarato monumento nazionale nel 1927 e parco nazionale nel 1948, questo luogo è immerso in una vegetazione di baobab. Le rovine riguardano l'antica città di mercanti di Gedi, risalenti tra il tredicesimo e il diciassettesimo secolo. Si rilevano in particolare le tre moschee e la casa del sultano. Gli oggetti rinvenuti nelle case sono custoditi nel museo inaugurato nel 2000 e visitabile alla fine del tour.
Inoltre, all'ingresso verremo accolti da tante simpatiche scimmiette abituate alla presenza e all'interazione con l'uomo, alle quali piacciono molto le banane portate dai turisti! Quasi impossibile non farsele rubare dalle mani.

The ruins of the city of Gede are located 7 km from the town of Watamu and are the most important archaeological site on the coast. The word "Gede" comes from the Oromo dialect and means "precious". Declared a national monument in 1927 and a national park in 1948, this place is surrounded by baobab vegetation. The ruins concern the ancient city of Gedi merchants, dating back between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries. In particular, three mosques and the sultan's house are notable. The objects found in the houses are kept in the museum inaugurated in 2000 and can be visited at the end of the tour.
Additionally, at the entrance, we will be greeted by many friendly monkeys accustomed to the presence and interaction with humans, who very much enjoy the bananas brought by tourists! It's almost impossible not to have them stolen from your hands.
